The Awl Network Is Under Attack! - Connor Simpson - The Atlantic Wire (via bobbyfinger)
Pretty sure this thing struck just in time to stop me from being able to make prompt comments on the “your 90s dude-crush as food” post, so BOOOOOO

I made some homemade granola for the first time in forever last night. I used some ancient wheat germ that’s been waiting in my fridge since last time and no fucks were given. Best by dates are a capitalist construct. Today I’m hoping to make diy yogurt the first time! I’ve always been afraid to attempt it.
Had a fun day at Disneyland this week. My work bestie and I got the same day off (yeah underemployment!) so I made us some iced coffees and packed us some snacks and off we went to check out the new Fantasy Faire area that recently opened. We also checked out the new Jasmine-themed makeup collection at Sephora and I found a certain stuffed animal I’d had my eye out for. They’ve had ~ black and white old school ~ versions of Mickey, Minnie and Goofy for awhile but I didn’t find Donald until now. Donald and his anger issues have always resonated with me more than that little goody goody Mickey so I had to bring him home.
Hey all - we let Slate borrow Harold McGee’s story on old cans from the Apocalypse Issue. Go read it! It’s awesome and will totally make you less queasy about how old all the food in your grandma’s pantry is.
Drawing of Harold diving for cans by the incomparable Tony Millionaire.
Oh my god, as a canning geek this is fascinating to me! Yesterday I mentioned I was thinking about my ability to eat MSG in the apocalypse; that was because of this issue of Lucky Peach.
This.
This was my lunch today! And for the first time, a fact occurred to me: I try to increase my tolerance for MSG by continuing to eat noodles because my sensitivity to it developed late in life and I refuse to live without instant ramen, but if the zombie apocalypse happens I will be glad as hell that I worked on my MSG tolerance because all the food that is left will probably be stuffed with it. Bonus!
Last night my bff, work bestie and I went to Hollywood for an evening of Django Unchained related entertainment. First we had dinner at Toi on Sunset, this hip little Thai place we’ve been going to for years that’s famously awesome. I had forgotten but there’s a poster for the Pulp Fiction soundtrack that’s signed by Quentin Tarantino from their “best customer” and we ended up sitting under so that kicked everything off appropriately. Then we went across the street to Meltdown Comics and I was finally able to get a copy of both issues of the Django Unchained comics that are out so far.
Afterwards we went to the New Beverly Cinema, a great revival theater that QT became the landlord of a couple of years ago to prevent it from being turned into a Chipotle. They had a double feature of Django paired with Buck and the Preacher, a Western directed by Sidney Pointer and starring him, Harry Belafonte and Ruby Dee. It was a good movie that showcased a lovely 19th century Black love story, like Django does.
We also got some bomb milkshakes at a place called MILK across the street from the theater and took them into the movie because the New Bev is cool like that. Still bought some concessions though because that’s how theaters stay alive.
This was my first chance to wear my new red dress from Domino Dollhouse. It’s a few days late but I felt very Valentines-y.

Beaded sweater borrowed from Mom’s closet, INC International Concepts (L)
